Remote Desktop Overview
Remote Desktop is Microsoft's new version of Terminal Services and is provided with Windows XP (inc Home version???). With old style Terminal Services, the server was only available as part of the Windows server platforms.
Remote Desktop is faster than VNC and avoids sending desktop bitmaps etc. However, it locks out local users from the server being acccessed whereas VNC gives a view and optional control of the current session.
Configuring a server:
- My Computer properties
- Remote Tab
- Allow users to remotely connect to this computer
.....then choose which users should be allowed to log in.
May need to be installed from the XP installation CD. (Perform additional tasks, Setp-up remote desktop connection)
Then START, Programs, Accessories, Communications, Remote Desktop Connection
